Four Sculptures in Three Visits

These four sculptures are on display in three separate sculpture parks in Changchun China.

oh wait! I see something...damn!!!

There always something, just when you think you have finished, so I grabbed the brushes and back to work. I really want to finish because in the morning I and six other artists are headed to Beijing for 4 days of fun and seeing the sights (my second time), I'll be the tour guide for some of the group. On our list of to do, 798 Art district, Great Wall, Forbidden City and Summer Palace (I've not seen). We booked the hotel, The Beijing Traditional Hotel in the old Hutong district near the Forbidden City, a nice place. We are taking the high speed train which will take 6 hours hitting speeds of 250 km per hour...should be fun.

Stone Work: Process

The first step is to cut the foot of the sculpture flat making it the base, so the stone is upside down. Next, we lop off small sections because I needed to see how the stone was going to split, stones fracture differently. Once the foot was cut the crane was called in and the stones were rolled up right. (see video) I chiseled some lines that later would guide my saw work. I made lots of measurements where I wanted the holes drilled and the splitting pins driven to break off larger sections before we start moving toward the final surface with the 7 inch diamond saws . The holes would take about 20 minutes to drill and we had to drill 20 holes some times, do the math. This part of the process took days and was slow and careful. I could work inside the studio on my second sculpture (bronze) that was just in the clay stage.

Seven weeks in China had kept me out of the beautiful water here in Saipan, a place which has some of the worlds most incredible dive spots. The ocean really puts on a spectacular show when you light it up with the flash of a camera. I love the lush texture that the underwater world contains, it is just so rich...visually. There are few things that you can do that totally allow a person to move in a truly 3-D way in this wonderful world we live in. As a three Dimensional artist, experiencing movement underwater, total 3-D directional movement, really engages your senses. Bubbles fall up, your not bound to a flat plane...fish rarely swim up-side down...but you can, it's just so cool. Here are some of the photos I've taken in the last month.
